A small petrol hatchback driven 12,000 km a year in Bagmati costs roughly Rs 1.15–1.8 lakh a year in fuel, vehicle tax, renewal and compulsory insurance, depending mostly on the real fuel economy you get. Fuel is about three-quarters or more of that, and servicing and comprehensive insurance come on top.
Most car buyers in Nepal compare showroom prices and EMIs, then get surprised by the yearly bills. This guide adds up what a petrol car costs to keep on the road each year, using official prices and published tax and insurance rates, and shows our arithmetic so you can redo it for your own car. If you are weighing petrol against electric, our EV vs petrol 5-year cost comparison covers that question; here we stay with petrol.
1. Fuel: the biggest bill
The price
Nepal Oil Corporation (NOC) sets retail fuel prices. Its press release of 15 October 2026 kept petrol at Rs 200 a litre in Kathmandu, the level set on 3 August 2026, when ShareSansar reported a rise from Rs 197. Prices differ slightly by depot: NOC lists them by category and says they apply within 15 km of the depot.
The price moves. In April 2026 Business 360 reported petrol at Rs 219 a litre in the Kathmandu Valley.
| 10 Apr | 219 Rs |
|---|---|
| 2 Aug | 197 Rs |
| 3 Aug | 200 Rs |
| 15 Oct | 200 Rs |

Claimed vs real fuel economy
Brands publish a claimed mileage from a standard test. Suzuki Nepal lists 26.68 km/l for the Celerio and 25.75 km/l for the Swift. Traffic in Kathmandu, hills and air-conditioning usually mean you get less than the claim. Nobody publishes an official Nepal real-world figure, so below we also use 16 km/l as our own assumption for mixed driving. Use your own figure if you know it.
The arithmetic
Example, our assumptions: 12,000 km a year, petrol at Rs 200 a litre.
| Fuel economy | Litres a year | Fuel cost a year | Fuel cost per km |
|---|---|---|---|
| 26.68 km/l (Celerio claim) | 450 | Rs 89,955 | Rs 7.50 |
| 25.75 km/l (Swift claim) | 466 | Rs 93,204 | Rs 7.77 |
| 16 km/l (our assumption) | 750 | Rs 1,50,000 | Rs 12.50 |
Distance matters as much as economy. At 16 km/l, 8,000 km a year costs Rs 1,00,000 in petrol and 20,000 km costs Rs 2,50,000. If petrol went back to April's Rs 219, the 12,000 km bill at 16 km/l would rise from Rs 1,50,000 to Rs 1,64,250.
2. Annual vehicle tax: set by your province
Each province sets its own yearly vehicle tax in its finance act, by engine size (cc) from your bluebook. Ratopati's July 2026 comparison of the FY 2083/84 rates gives:
| Private car, jeep or van | Cheapest province | Most expensive province |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 1,000cc | Rs 21,000 (Karnali, Sudurpashchim) | Rs 23,000 (Koshi) |
| 1,500–2,000cc | Rs 26,000 (Karnali, Sudurpashchim) | Rs 32,000 (Koshi) |
| Above 3,500cc | Rs 70,000 (Bagmati, Koshi) |
For Bagmati, which covers Kathmandu, we could not open the provincial gazette. Kokil, a calculator site that transcribes the provincial acts, lists Rs 22,000 up to 1,000cc and Rs 25,000 for 1,001–1,500cc, plus a renewal fee of Rs 500 for a car. Treat those as unofficial and check at the counter. Bagmati also adds 5% a year for vehicles older than 14 years from manufacture, according to Fiscal Nepal.
So the 998cc Celerio sits in the lowest band, while the 1,197cc Swift, Hyundai Grand i10 Nios and Honda Amaze fall in the next one.
3. Insurance
Third-party (compulsory)
Every vehicle must carry third-party insurance. The Nepal Insurance Authority's rate directive sets the third-party part for private cars at:
| Engine size | Third-party premium |
|---|---|
| Below 1,000cc | Rs 3,000 |
| 1,000–1,600cc | Rs 4,000 |
| Above 1,600cc | Rs 6,000 |
These exclude VAT, stamp duty and the compulsory driver and passenger accident cover, so the price at the counter is higher. The FY 2026/27 budget doubled the third-party compensation limit to Rs 10 lakh, and Bizmandu reported in July 2026 that the Authority is preparing new premiums. Officials estimated a rise of about 70%, but no new tariff had been published by late October 2026.
Comprehensive (optional, but often required by your bank)
Comprehensive cover also pays for damage to your own car. Its premium depends mainly on the insured value and the car's age, so it varies too much to print one figure. Get two or three written quotes. If the car is on a loan, the bank will usually insist on it (see our auto loan guide).
4. Servicing and wear: the cost nobody publishes
We could not find a published service price list from any car distributor in Nepal, so we have not put a number on servicing. What we can say:
- Free-service offers are common. In the 2026 festive season, Hyundai Nepal's campaign included six years of free servicing and Honda Nepal's offer five years of free servicing, according to ShareSansar. Neither report says whether parts as well as labour are free, so ask what each service includes.
- Ask for the written schedule (every how many km or months) and the price of each visit for the first five years, before you buy.
- Wear parts are extra: tyres, brake pads, wipers, the 12-volt battery and clutch. Budget for them from the second or third year.
Putting it together
Worked example, our assumptions: Bagmati, 12,000 km a year, petrol at Rs 200, third-party only, servicing not included.
| Yearly cost | Celerio (claimed 26.68 km/l) | Celerio (16 km/l) | Swift (claimed 25.75 km/l) | Swift (16 km/l) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Petrol | Rs 89,955 | Rs 1,50,000 | Rs 93,204 | Rs 1,50,000 |
| Vehicle tax (Bagmati, Kokil) | Rs 22,000 | Rs 22,000 | Rs 25,000 | Rs 25,000 |
| Renewal fee (Kokil) | Rs 500 | Rs 500 | Rs 500 | Rs 500 |
| Third-party insurance (before VAT) | Rs 3,000 | Rs 3,000 | Rs 4,000 | Rs 4,000 |
| Total | Rs 1,15,455 | Rs 1,75,500 | Rs 1,22,704 | Rs 1,79,500 |
| Per km | Rs 9.62 | Rs 14.63 | Rs 10.23 | Rs 14.96 |
| Petrol | 1,50,000 Rs |
|---|---|
| Vehicle tax | 25,000 Rs |
| Third-party insurance | 4,000 Rs |
| Renewal fee | 500 Rs |

Add servicing, wear parts, comprehensive insurance and parking, and the real figure is higher still. The lesson is simple: your driving distance and real fuel economy decide most of the bill, so a car's claimed km/l is worth comparing as closely as its price.
How to cut the bill
- Pick the smallest engine that suits you. It is cheaper on fuel and can drop you into a lower tax band.
- Check tyre pressure monthly and avoid long idling in traffic.
- Pay tax on time to avoid the step-up fines.
- Compare insurance quotes every renewal, not only the first year.
- Ask for free-service terms in writing when you buy.
