As of 24 October 2026, petrol and diesel both cost Rs 200 a litre in Kathmandu, Pokhara and Dipayal, Rs 199 in Surkhet and Dang, and Rs 197.50 in the other depot areas, after Nepal Oil Corporation (NOC) left prices unchanged on 15 October. That is Rs 44 a litre more than in January 2026, when petrol cost Rs 156.
"Petrol price in Nepal today" is searched every day, especially after news of a revision. This page keeps the current price, the full 2026 history and the monthly cost for common vehicles in one place. We update it when NOC changes prices.
Today's petrol and diesel price by depot
NOC sets one price for each group of depots; it applies within 15 km of the depot. These are the prices since 3 August 2026, which NOC kept on 15 October:
| Depot group | Main depots | Petrol | Diesel | Kerosene |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Third category | Kathmandu, Pokhara, Dipayal | Rs 200 | Rs 200 | Rs 200 |
| Second category | Surkhet, Dang | Rs 199 | Rs 199 | Rs 199 |
| First category | Biratnagar, Birgunj, Janakpur, Amlekhgunj, Bhalwari, Charali, Dhangadhi | Rs 197.50 | Rs 197.50 | Rs 197.50 |
Prices from Nepal News (15 October 2026) and NOC's website; depot list from ShareSansar (3 August 2026). A 14.2 kg LPG cylinder costs Rs 2,060.
Because NOC's prices apply within 15 km of each depot, pumps further away may charge a little more.
How the price changed in 2026
2026 has been the most volatile year for fuel in Nepal in a long time. NOC and the news reports blamed the rise in world oil prices linked to the conflict in West Asia.
| Date | Petrol (Kathmandu) | Diesel (Kathmandu) | What happened |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | Rs 156 | Rs 137 | Start of the year |
| 16 March | Rs 172 | Rs 152 | Petrol +Rs 15, diesel +Rs 10 |
| Late March | Rs 187 | Rs 167 | Second rise (implied by the 3 April figures) |
| 3 April | Rs 202 | Rs 182 | Third rise in a month; a new record |
| 10 April | Rs 219 | Rs 207 | Petrol +Rs 17, diesel +Rs 25 |
| 1 May | Rs 217 | – | Petrol −Rs 2, diesel −Rs 12 |
| 1 July | Rs 197 | Rs 195 | Petrol −Rs 20, diesel −Rs 30 |
| 3 August | Rs 200 | Rs 200 | Petrol +Rs 3, diesel +Rs 5 |
| 15 October | Rs 200 | Rs 200 | No change |

Where a report gave only the change, we worked out the price from it. Diesel's level in May and June is not given in the reports; the 1 July cut implies Rs 225 before it.

For a longer view: in October 2024 Ratopati reported petrol at Rs 159 in Kathmandu after a Rs 1 rise. The Rs 202 of 3 April 2026 beat the previous record of Rs 199 set in June 2022, The Rising Nepal noted, and the Rs 219 a week later went higher still.
Cooking gas and kerosene moved too
NOC changes LPG and kerosene in the same notices, so household budgets felt 2026 twice. Kerosene has followed the diesel price all year and now also costs Rs 200 a litre in Kathmandu. A 14.2 kg LPG cylinder went from Rs 1,910 to Rs 2,010 on 10 April (Business 360) and up another Rs 150 to Rs 2,160 on 1 May (Ratopati), before a Rs 100 cut on 1 July brought it to Rs 2,060 (ShareSansar), where it stayed in October.
| Date | LPG cylinder (14.2 kg) | Change |
|---|---|---|
| Before 10 April | Rs 1,910 | |
| 10 April | Rs 2,010 | +Rs 100 |
| 1 May | Rs 2,160 | +Rs 150 |
| 1 July | Rs 2,060 | −Rs 100 |
| 15 October | Rs 2,060 | No change |
Why the price moves, and when it changes next
NOC buys petroleum from Indian Oil Corporation and reviews retail prices roughly every two weeks, when it receives a new supply price. It does not always pass the change on:
- After the April rise, NOC still reported losses of about Rs 34 a litre on petrol and Rs 120 on diesel, according to The Kathmandu Post.
- On 15 October, it kept prices unchanged even though the new supply price called for a rise, accepting an estimated loss of about Rs 3.45 billion for the fortnight, Nepal News reported.
So a rise remains possible at the next review, and a cut is possible if world prices fall. There is no fixed date for "tomorrow's price"; check NOC's website or the news after each fortnightly review.
The corporation estimates that maintaining these prices will result in a fortnightly loss of approximately Rs 3.45 billion.
What Rs 200 a litre costs you each month
Example, our arithmetic: 1,000 km a month at Rs 200 a litre. Claimed figures come from the brands' Nepal sites; real-world economy is usually lower, so we also show our own cautious assumptions.
| Vehicle | Fuel economy | Litres a month | Fuel cost a month | Per km | Extra cost per Rs 10/litre rise |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hero Xtreme 125R (claimed) | 66 km/l | 15.2 | Rs 3,030 | Rs 3.03 | Rs 152 |
| Typical scooter (our assumption) | 45 km/l | 22.2 | Rs 4,444 | Rs 4.44 | Rs 222 |
| Suzuki Swift (claimed) | 25.75 km/l | 38.8 | Rs 7,767 | Rs 7.77 | Rs 388 |
| Small car, mixed driving (our assumption) | 16 km/l | 62.5 | Rs 12,500 | Rs 12.50 | Rs 625 |
| Toyota Hilux 2.8 diesel (claimed) | 13 km/l | 76.9 | Rs 15,385 | Rs 15.38 | Rs 769 |
| Hero Xtreme 125R (66 km/l) | 3,030 Rs |
|---|---|
| Scooter (45 km/l) | 4,444 Rs |
| Swift (25.75 km/l) | 7,767 Rs |
| Car at 16 km/l | 12,500 Rs |
| Hilux diesel (13 km/l) | 15,385 Rs |

What 2026 did to your bill: at January's Rs 156, the small car at 16 km/l used Rs 9,750 of petrol for 1,000 km. At today's Rs 200 it is Rs 12,500, or Rs 2,750 more every month. At April's peak of Rs 219 it was Rs 13,688.
To work out your own figure: monthly km ÷ km per litre × price per litre. Our petrol car running cost guide adds tax, insurance and servicing to the fuel bill.
How to spend less on fuel
- Check tyre pressure monthly and avoid long idling in traffic.
- Choose economy when you buy. Compare claimed km/l in the compare tool; the best mileage bikes list helps two-wheeler buyers.
- Consider electric if you can charge at home. At NEA's top domestic rate with VAT (Rs 11.55 a unit), an electric scooter costs a fraction of a petrol one per km; see petrol vs electric two-wheelers, EV vs petrol: the 5-year cost or try the EV vs petrol cost calculator.
- Hybrids cut fuel use but cost far more to buy in Nepal; see our hybrid cars guide.
