Rs 4 lakh is where most Nepali buyers step up from a plain 100 to 125 cc commuter to a 150 to 160 cc bike with a front disc brake, better looks and more power. This guide covers motorcycles priced from Rs 3 lakh up to Rs 4 lakh; cheaper bikes are in best bikes under Rs 3 lakh. It does not cover scooters. For scooters in the same budget, see best scooters under Rs 3 lakh.

One honest note first: this is a buyer's guide built from published specs, not a road test. We have not ridden these bikes back to back, so we do not describe how any of them feels. None of the official Nepal pages publish a mileage figure for these models, so we do not rank on fuel economy. Ask the dealer for the claimed figure and the test behind it. Prices are ex-showroom: registration, road tax and insurance come on top (see our guide to bluebook, road tax and insurance).

What is the cheapest bike in this Rs 3 to 4 lakh band?

The Honda SP 125 DRS at Rs 3,12,900 (bikes below Rs 3 lakh also exist; see our Rs 3 lakh guide). It is also the lightest bike in the list at 116 kg, which is 30 kg less than the Pulsar 125 at 146 kg (146 minus 116). The Bajaj Pulsar 125 is only Rs 2,000 more (3,14,900 minus 3,12,900) and has a bigger 15 litre fuel tank against Honda's 11.2 litres, which suits long daily distances. Honda lists combined braking (CBS) on the SP 125, and its page shows both a disc and a drum front brake option.

Which is the most powerful bike under Rs 4 lakh?

On published figures, the TVS Apache RTR 160 4V leads with 12.91 kW, followed by the Hero Xtreme 160R 4V at 12.43 kW. Both are about 1.3 to 2.6 kW above the Pulsar 150 (10.3 kW): 12.91 minus 10.3 is 2.61, and 12.43 minus 10.3 is 2.13. Those are brand figures measured to each maker's own standard, so treat them as a rough guide, not a race result.

The Apache RTR 160 4V starts at Rs 3,88,900 (DD ABS) and the Xtreme 160R 4V at Rs 3,98,900 with single-channel ABS. Both brands also sell dearer versions with dual-channel ABS: Rs 4,29,900 for the Apache 160 4V USD and Rs 4,27,900 for the Xtreme. Our Yamaha R15 vs KTM RC 200 guide covers bikes one step up.

What about ABS and safety?

ABS stops a wheel locking when you brake hard. In this group, the Pulsar 150, the Apache RTR 160 2V (ABS version), the Apache RTR 160 4V and the Hero Xtreme 160R 4V list some form of ABS, mostly single-channel (front wheel only). Yamaha lists front-wheel ABS on the newer FZ and FZ-S versions, which cost more than the V2 versions in our table. The 125 cc bikes list CBS or do not state ABS. If ABS matters to you, ask for it in writing on the invoice for the exact variant, because several models are sold with and without it at different prices. The Apache RTR 160 2V is a good example: TVS lists an ABS version at Rs 3,49,900 and an FI version at Rs 3,64,900 on separate pages, so prices do not simply rise with features. Check which version is in stock with the dealer.

Which 150 cc bike is best for city riding?

If your daily ride is traffic and short trips, weight and a low, familiar seat matter most. The Yamaha FZ FI V2 (132 kg), FZ-S FI V2 (133 kg) and Benelli TNT 150i (134 kg) are the lightest 150 cc bikes here. Seat height is listed at 790 mm for the Yamaha FZ range and 780 mm for the Benelli. The Pulsar 150 is the heaviest 150 at 148 kg for the single-disc version, with a 15 litre tank. See the full 150cc bikes in Nepal guide and Pulsar 150 vs Apache RTR 160 4V.

How much is the EMI on a Rs 4 lakh bike?

Nepal Rastra Bank limits vehicle loans to 60% of the price, so a Rs 4,00,000 bike needs at least Rs 1,60,000 as a down payment (40% of 4,00,000) and a loan of up to Rs 2,40,000. Interest rates differ by bank, so use our EMI calculator with your bank's current rate, and read the bike and scooter loan guide.
