No EV distributor in Nepal publishes the price of a replacement battery. The only figures reported so far put a 3 kWh scooter battery at Rs 90,000 to Rs 1,40,000 and an electric car battery at more than Rs 15 lakh (The Annapurna Express, January 2026), but most new electric cars carry an 8-year battery warranty, so few owners should face that bill early.
This guide collects what has actually been published, from news outlets and the distributors' own pages, and says plainly where the information stops. It is not a service quote. If a battery price matters to your decision, and it should, ask the dealer for one in writing before you buy.
What a new battery costs: the figures that exist
We searched distributor sites, service pages and Nepali news for a published battery price. Here is everything we could confirm:
| What | Figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 3 kWh electric scooter battery | Rs 90,000 to Rs 1,40,000 | The Annapurna Express, January 2026 |
| Electric car battery | can exceed Rs 15 lakh | The Annapurna Express, January 2026 |
| Battery share of an EV's price | nearly half | The Kathmandu Post, May 2026 |
| Battery share of a Tata EV's cost | 40% | Onlinekhabar, April 2023 |
| Global average lithium-ion pack price, 2025 | US$108 per kWh (US$99 for electric car packs) | BloombergNEF, December 2025 |
Two things stand out. First, the Nepal figures are broad: the Annapurna Express gives a range for scooters and only a lower limit for cars, not a price for any named model. Second, no brand we checked lists a pack price on its website, so the honest answer for any specific model is "ask the distributor".
The BloombergNEF number is a global average of what battery packs cost to make and sell to carmakers, with China cheaper at US$84 per kWh. It is useful as a trend (pack prices have been falling) but it is not what you would pay for a replacement in Kathmandu. A retail replacement pack also carries shipping, import taxes, the dealer's margin and labour. The import duty that applies to a battery imported on its own as a spare part is not something we could confirm from an official source, so we leave it out.
A 3 kWh scooter battery costs between NPR 90,000 and 140,000, while car batteries can exceed NPR 15 lakh.
Why a car battery costs so much more than a scooter battery
The simplest way to see the gap is battery size. The car batteries below store roughly 5 to 25 times as much energy as the scooter batteries. These are the official battery sizes of some popular EVs in our catalogue:
| Ather Rizta (Base) | 2.7 kWh |
|---|---|
| TVS iQube S 3.5 | 3.5 kWh |
| Wuling Mini EV (Standard Range) | 16.2 kWh |
| BYD Atto 1 (Dynamic) | 30.08 kWh |
| BYD Dolphin | 44.9 kWh |
| MG4 EV (Comfort) | 51 kWh |
| BYD M6 | 71.8 kWh |
Source: Official Nepal distributor pages (Ather, TVS, Wuling, BYD/Cimex, MG), checked October 2026
A rough scale check (our own arithmetic, not a price). If you divide the Annapurna Express scooter range by 3 kWh, you get about Rs 30,000 to Rs 46,700 per kWh. Applying that same rate to a car is only an illustration, because car packs use different cells, cooling and electronics, and are bought in different volumes:
| Battery | Size | At Rs 30,000/kWh | At Rs 46,700/kWh |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wuling Mini EV Standard Range | 16.2 kWh | Rs 4.86 lakh | Rs 7.57 lakh |
| BYD Atto 1 Dynamic | 30.08 kWh | Rs 9.02 lakh | Rs 14.05 lakh |
| BYD Dolphin | 44.9 kWh | Rs 13.47 lakh | Rs 20.97 lakh |
The Dolphin row lands either side of the "more than Rs 15 lakh" figure reported for cars, which suggests the reported range is plausible for a mid-size electric hatchback. Treat the table as a sense of scale. A real quote could be higher or lower.
When you might actually need a new battery
A lithium-ion battery rarely "dies" in one day. It slowly holds less charge, so your range shrinks. The Annapurna Express notes that a battery is usually considered for second-life use once it falls below 70–80% of its original capacity, and that, by one estimate it cites, nearly 60% of battery failures are linked to how owners handle their vehicles.
In practice, you are most likely to need a pack (or part of one) in three situations:
- Gradual wear after many years. Capacity has fallen far enough that the range no longer suits your daily use. If this happens inside the warranty and below the brand's threshold, it is a warranty claim, not a purchase.
- Physical damage. A hard hit to the underside, or water entering a damaged pack. Accident damage is usually an insurance matter, not a warranty one.
- A faulty module or cell. One part of the pack fails while the rest is healthy. This is where repair can replace replacement (see below).
What the warranties cover
The battery warranty is your main protection against a replacement bill. These are the terms the distributors publish (checked October 2026); "whichever comes first" applies to all of them:
| Model | Battery warranty |
|---|---|
| BYD Dolphin, Atto 3, M6 | 8 years or 1,60,000 km (battery and vehicle, terms apply) |
| MG4 EV | 8 years or 1,50,000 km (high-voltage battery) |
| Wuling Mini EV | 8 years or 1,50,000 km (battery and motor) |
| Dongfeng Nammi Box | 8 years or 2,00,000 km; optional paid plan to 11 years or 2,50,000 km |
| Ather 450 | up to 8 years or 80,000 km with the optional Eight70 add-on (Rs 9,999 or Rs 12,499 on the 2.9 kWh models) |
| Yadea GT80 | 3 years or 50,000 km |
Scooter warranties vary far more than car warranties: from 8 years on some models to 2 or 3 years on others. On a cheaper scooter, the battery may well need replacing within the life of the vehicle, so the reported Rs 90,000 to Rs 1,40,000 for a 3 kWh pack is a real number to plan for. Our battery warranty comparison lists more brands and the small print.
Capacity guarantees. Some warranties also say how much capacity loss counts as a fault. Ather's Nepal warranty policy says the battery's nominal capacity shall not fall by more than 30% during the battery warranty period, measured by Ather's own test. Ask your brand whether it has a similar clause; many warranty pages do not say.
Repair instead of replacement
A battery pack is built from modules, and modules from cells. If one module fails, a workshop with the right equipment may be able to repair or replace only that part. Sipradi, the Tata distributor, opened an EV battery diagnostics and restoration facility at Bagdol that, according to The Himalayan Times, can restore damaged or unbalanced cells so the whole pack does not have to be replaced. Neither the article nor Tata's site gives repair prices.
The Annapurna Express argues the opposite problem for the wider market: without local refurbishment centres, owners often have no option but to import a new pack. Before you buy any EV, ask the dealer whether its workshop in Nepal repairs batteries at module level, or only swaps whole packs.
How to keep the risk low
- Buy the warranty, not just the car. Compare years and kilometres, and check who pays for diagnosis.
- Get a written battery quote. Ask: "What would a replacement pack cost today, fitted?" A dealer that will not answer is telling you something.
- Follow the service schedule at an authorised centre, and keep the stamped booklet.
- Look after the pack. Avoid scraping the underside on rough roads and do not drive through deep water; our monsoon driving tips cover flooded roads.
- Buying used? Ask for a battery health report and confirm the warranty transfers. Our used EV guide explains how.
- Count it in your sums. The EV vs petrol cost calculator shows running-cost savings; set those against a possible battery bill if you plan to keep a vehicle beyond its battery warranty.
The bottom line
For electric cars sold new in Nepal today, an 8-year battery warranty is the norm, which makes a paid replacement in the first years unlikely. After that, or on a scooter with a short warranty, a new pack is a large bill: reported at Rs 90,000 to Rs 1,40,000 for a 3 kWh scooter battery and more than Rs 15 lakh for a car. Because no distributor publishes model-by-model prices, the most useful thing you can do is ask for one in writing before you sign.
