Hybrid cars in Nepal: which models, prices, tax and whether a hybrid makes sense versus an EV
Wheels of Nepal · Last updated: · 9 min read
Nepal's cheapest strong-hybrid car is the Suzuki Victoris Vxi THS at Rs 85.49 lakh (official price), and most hybrids cost more than Rs 1 crore, because hybrids are taxed much like petrol cars while electric cars get lower rates. If you can charge at home, a similar-sized EV is usually cheaper to buy and far cheaper to run; a hybrid makes sense mainly if you cannot charge and drive a lot.
Searches such as "hybrid car price in Nepal", "Toyota hybrid car price in Nepal" and "hybrid car tax in Nepal" keep growing as fuel prices swing. This guide lists every hybrid in our catalogue with its price, explains the tax, and puts three hybrids against electric cars of similar size. For the same-model petrol vs hybrid vs EV payback, see our earlier EV, hybrid or petrol analysis; we do not repeat it here. We have not driven these cars; fuel figures are the brands' claims.
Three kinds of "hybrid"
- Mild hybrid: a petrol car with a small electric helper; it cannot drive on electricity alone. Suzuki's "Smart Hybrid" petrol Victoris and Grand Vitara are priced as petrol cars.
- Strong (self-charging) hybrid: petrol engine plus motor and battery, charged by the engine and braking. You never plug it in. Most cars below are this type.
- Plug-in hybrid (PHEV): a bigger battery you charge from the wall, plus a petrol engine. Our glossary entry on hybrids explains the difference.

Without an official price. Our catalogue also lists hybrids and plug-in hybrids whose prices come only from launch reports, so treat them as indicative: the Toyota Camry hybrid (about Rs 1.85 crore), BAIC BJ30e (about Rs 1.20 crore), BMW's 330e, 530e and X5 xDrive50e plug-ins (Rs 2.5–5.79 crore) and Denza's B5 and B8 plug-ins (Rs 2.97–3.8 crore). Jetour's T1 and T2 plug-ins are listed as upcoming.
Two-wheelers: Yamaha sells the RayZR 125 Fi Hybrid scooter from Rs 2,91,900 on the official MAW site. It is a petrol scooter that you never plug in.
How hybrids are taxed in Nepal
At import: much like petrol cars
The FY 2083/84 budget moved electric cars to a value-based system of customs duty and a Clean Infrastructure Investment Fee (see our EV tax explainer). That system covers only fully electric cars. Hybrids and plug-in hybrids stay under the engine-vehicle rules, and we could not confirm their exact excise rate from an official copy of the enacted Finance Act, so we do not print one. The showroom prices above already include every import tax.
The tax structure for hybrids is similar to traditional gasoline vehicles.
The same article notes that most hybrids in Nepal start above Rs 1 crore. That is why a hybrid costs so much more than the petrol version of the same car: Subaru's own price list puts the Crosstrek 2.0i-S Hybrid at Rs 1.69 crore against Rs 1.40 crore for the petrol 2.0i-L, a Rs 29 lakh gap (the trims also differ in equipment).
Every year: tax by engine size
Provinces set annual vehicle tax by cc for petrol and diesel cars and by kW for EVs. We found no separate hybrid band in any province's table, so expect a hybrid to pay the band for its engine size; confirm at your transport office. Example, our arithmetic, with Bagmati's FY 2083/84 bands (Kokil, unofficial) and the NIA's third-party tariff:
| Car | Engine or motor | Bagmati yearly tax | Third-party part (before VAT) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Victoris THS, City e:HEV, Yaris Cross | 1,490–1,498cc | Rs 25,000 | Rs 4,000 |
| Corolla Cross | 1,798cc | Rs 27,000 | Rs 6,000 |
| RAV4 | 2,487cc | Rs 37,000 | Rs 6,000 |
| BYD Atto 3 or Suzuki e Vitara (EV) | 100–105.8 kW | Rs 15,000 | no cc-based figure |
All provinces' rates are in our vehicle tax 2083/84 guide, and insurance is explained in our vehicle insurance guide.
Hybrid or EV? Three pairs compared
Each hybrid is set against an EV of a similar class from our catalogue. Example, our assumptions: 1,500 km a month; petrol at Rs 200 a litre (NOC, Kathmandu); electricity at Rs 11.55 a unit (NEA's top domestic rate plus 5% VAT); the brands' claimed fuel economy and range (BYD and Suzuki do not name a test cycle on these pages).
| Hybrid price | Hybrid fuel per month | EV price | EV electricity per month | EV costs less to buy by | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Yaris Cross vs BYD Atto 3 Advance | Rs 1.29 crore | Rs 12,000 (Rs 8.00/km) | Rs 62.90 lakh | Rs 2,507 (Rs 1.67/km) | Rs 66.10 lakh |
| Corolla Cross vs BYD Sealion 7 | Rs 1.81 crore | Rs 15,000 (Rs 10.00/km) | Rs 93.00 lakh | Rs 2,827 (Rs 1.88/km) | Rs 88.00 lakh |
| Victoris Vxi THS vs Suzuki e Vitara Delta | Rs 85.49 lakh | Rs 10,471 (Rs 6.98/km) | Rs 52.99 lakh | Rs 1,929 (Rs 1.29/km) | Rs 32.50 lakh |
EV energy per km = battery kWh ÷ claimed range × Rs 11.55: Atto 3 49.92 kWh/345 km, Sealion 7 71.8 kWh/440 km, e Vitara 49 kWh/440 km.
| Toyota Yaris Cross hybrid | 136.2 lakh |
|---|---|
| BYD Atto 3 Advance (EV) | 64.4 lakh |
| Toyota Corolla Cross hybrid | 190 lakh |
| BYD Sealion 7 (EV) | 94.7 lakh |
Source: Our worked example: official Toyota, BYD (Cimex) prices; claimed economy and range; petrol Rs 200/l (NOC); electricity Rs 11.55/unit (NEA + VAT)
In every pair the EV is cheaper both to buy and to run, by a wide margin. Real-world economy is lower than every claim for both types, but the gap is too large for that to change the answer.
When a hybrid still makes sense
What we like
- No charging needed: you refuel at any pump, which matters if you cannot charge where you park
- Lower fuel use than the petrol version (Victoris: 28.65 vs 21.06 km/l claimed)
- Long trips with no planning around chargers
What could be better
- Costs much more than the petrol version, and more than a similar EV
- Pays the petrol car's yearly tax band, higher than an EV's
- Still uses petrol, so fuel price swings still hit you
- Hybrid battery warranty is not stated on the brand pages we read
A hybrid suits you if you cannot charge at home or work, drive long distances often, and are willing to pay a large premium for lower fuel use. An EV suits you if you can charge overnight; see our EV charging guide. A petrol car suits you if you drive little and want the lowest price; browse the car price list.

Is a hybrid better than an EV in Nepal?
On cost, no: in our three examples the EV is Rs 32–88 lakh cheaper to buy and costs Rs 8,500–12,200 less a month to run. A hybrid makes sense mainly if you cannot charge.
Do I need to charge a hybrid?
Not a normal (self-charging) hybrid. Only a plug-in hybrid, such as the MG HS Plug-in Hybrid, is charged from the wall.
Toyota's hybrid SUVs and sedan are priced in our Toyota car price in Nepal guide.
